Transition can be difficult
Once you have decided to take on fewer clients and transition into running the practice from a CEO standpoint, it is a difficult change, so be patient with yourself.
All those things were very difficult transitions, and it disappointed a lot of people, and if I hadn’t done it, it would not have freed up time and space on my plate to do the bigger things. So, if you are moving towards that transition, don’t delay. (Joe Sanok)
If you desire to make a shift, then it is time, because your passions are shifting. Be in the part of your business that you enjoy the most, instead of feeling stuck in your own company.
You are the boss of the business and the boss of yourself, so you can make the shift, even if it feels scary.
Potential clients
Because of your clinical experience, if you are still in the business, there will be a handful of clients that still want to see you and are willing to pay an increased hourly fee to see you.
Recognize that you either need to completely retire, or you need to set your boundaries and say when you are available, what your rates are, or how many people you are willing to see.
[You need to] figure out how you are going to reduce [client] access to you because it is very important to leveling up. (Joe Sanok)
Termination
Coming up to your transition out of seeing clients, talk to them and let them know that in three to six months you will be taking on an admin role at the practice, and will therefore be moving your caseload.
Some clients may:
- Decide to conclude their therapy with you and your practice
- Want to work with another clinician in your practice
- Spend time with you until you are no longer counseling
It is better to have an in-person conversation with your clients than to send out an email about this change as therapy is relationship-based, and your clients will appreciate it more.
