Some common unhealthy mindsets
Your words become your reality: many people are unaware of how they speak, and how that impacts their perception of a situation or of themselves.
I want to hear the words “I will” or “I am open to” because it scares people to commit to things, just saying it out aloud. [Look] at how you are speaking, what are you saying to yourself every single day, [because] it’s huge! (Melissa Vogel)
If someone constantly judges themselves in the mirror or talks negatively about themselves, over time it chips away at their self-perception until they self-deprecate constantly, and feel like they have little to no worth.
How can you change this unhealthy mindset?
Notice that you are actually doing it:
Catch yourself in the act. When you are next speaking to yourself, notice which words you are using and what you are saying.
If you need extra help, imagine if you spoke the way to speak to yourself to your best friend, or your partner? Would they appreciate it? If not, then it is highly likely that your subconscious does not appreciate it either.
Rewrite it
Even if it feels uncomfortable or silly in the moment – which it might if you are not used to it – but rewrite it and say something different and more positive or constructive instead.
Look at yourself, stand tall and speak the words that you want to hear, and create the feeling that you want to have because you can. By changing your words, you change your perception and if you change your perception to something more constructive and positive, you will have a more positive experience.
Think about the message you want to convey
When you are putting content online, whether in the form of blogposts or TikToks or photographs, ask yourself: what is my message with posting this?
Sometimes people can get lost in the social media world and post things to serve an unspoken internal want for validation or seeking acceptance or reward.
Whenever you are putting content on social media, be sure to know your why, so that you can be aware of your actions.
I always try to give a purpose to it, and that’s a way women can get sucked in too is [when] they just take a picture for attention … what’s your message with that? It’s the same thing I say to my daughters, and mine is always “well, what is my message with this photo?” (Melissa Vogel)
You have to do the work inside before you work on the outside
Working on your fitness journey without evaluating your mindsets and mentality will leave you running in circles where you are constantly starting but not able to sustain a change.
Now people have to do the mindset work. Let’s get some affirmations in place, let’s figure out what your goals are mentally, physically, spiritually … and the vision: where do you want to go? … think of [vision] as using Google Maps or some kind of navigation system; if you don’t put in an end-destination, if you don’t know exactly where you want to end up … you will never get anywhere. (Melissa Vogel)
When you have worked on your mindset, laid out your goals, and have an idea of where you want to be in three, six, and nine months, then you are far better prepared to start your transformational journey than if you were to second-guess yourself and never end up taking committed action.
By doing the inside work first, you are better prepared and able to work on the outside with more success and enjoyment, instead of feeling like you are running in circles and are always starting and finishing with not much achieved in between.
