How to Get More Clients

Are you working full-time, but starting a private practice on the side? Q&A was part of Next Level Practice, the most supportive community for therapists starting a private practice. In this video, Joe answers the question based on how to get more clients.

Question: How to Get More Clients?

Cammi: I work full-time and have technically started a private practice, but have no clients.

Getting More Clients Answer

Joe: I worked full-time as a Dean in a juvenile facility. And, I worked in juvenile justice for a bit in the courts in Kalamazoo. That’s really draining and busy work. So, I would say you really want to do a couple things. You want to block out time so that you can really focus on marketing your practice. Figure out how many clients per week is your ideal for having your full-time job and then work that many hours no matter what is going on in the week. You want to get used to that pace of life. So, if you’re full-time and that’s a 40 to 45 hour a week job, and maybe you’re supposed to be on-call, but you know that you want to do counseling, you’re not going to be able to take those on-call calls when you’re in counseling. You need to get in that habit of, ‘I’m going to just focus in on four hours a week of marketing the heck out of my practice’.

So, what might that look like? I would say, if we have four hours a week, I’d say we want to research and investigate people for an hour. We can be emailing to reach out to potential referral sources. I’d also make sure that your website, your Psychology Today, and your Facebook business page all really reflect who you are as a clinician. I would do a weekly Facebook live – schedule that out ahead of time and tell everybody that at 7 pm on Tuesdays, you’re going to be answering questions and talking about your niche. This helps with building an audience, and getting people to know that you know what you’re talking about. Then, that fourth hour, I would make sure you’re blogging the heck out of things. You should be writing at least one blog, if not two blogs, in that hour every single week.
