Q&A was part of Next Level Practice, the most supportive community for therapists starting a private practice. In this video, Joe answers the question based on how to manage time in-session.


How do you manage time in-session?


Well first, I’d say try stop talking. But also, I actually have some mental triggers that I do at the end of every session. So I’ll be in my chair and, when we’re at the like 43 minute mark, I’ll pull out a receipt, which is kind of a trigger to them that it’s time to be done. Then, I’ll keep talking while I stand up and come over to my computer and say, ‘Let’s figure out when we’re going to meet next’. So I’ll fill out their receipt, I’ll pull out my little square business card, then give them the card and receipt and then they’re out of there, right on the 45 minute mark. So, having some sort of trigger works, like pulling out the credit card machine, etc., however you do it, so that at the 45 mark they are walking out the door. I’d say those triggers are really effective ways to make sure that that people are out the door on time. Otherwise, you’re only stealing from yourself, but you’re also demonstrating good boundaries when you end that on time.
