Paula’s experience with burnout
It got to a point for Paula where she could not physically continue. She experienced increased anxiety, panic attacks, and extreme stomach pains due to her burnout.
After coming out of the ER due to her pain the second time, she decided that a change was necessary.
This is stupid … I’m happy to spend a lot of time and energy in my career and whatever that entails but I’m not willing to sacrifice my health for this. That was the final wake-up call for me. (Paula Davis)
Because of the spiked anxiety due to the burnout, in hindsight, Paula wished she had sought out a mental health professional to help her manage her mental health.
The relationship between teams and resilience in burnout
Even though burnout is an individual experience it is closely tied to the team around someone, the leaders that they follow, and the work culture that they are a part of.
One of the ways we go wrong in thinking about burnout is that we think of it as a purely individual experience, and that it is something that individuals just need to fix or get better at on their own. (Paula Davis)
Burnout should be spoken about as a systemic problem with its root causes instead of a random phenomenon.
Until burnout is spoken about as a problem that comes from and can affect communities and workplace teams, solutions will miss their mark.
Paula’s advice to private practitioners
You have an important role to play in the prevention of burnout. Some people do not know who to turn to in times of anxiety and stress.
Market yourself and get the word out that you can help people overcome burnout.
