PoP Culture meet Michael Diettrich-Chastain, MA, LPC, DCC, Consultant, Coach

You all know me, I’m Joe Sanok, the guy that runs Practice of the Practice. I also know a bunch of you. But you don’t know one another.

After three years of blogging, podcasting, and growing this community, I wanted to introduce you to some of you.

Everyday, I get emails from people talking about amazing steps they are taking based on what they have discovered through Practice of the Practice. I invited a number of people to tell us about their private practice journey.

Today I want to introduce you to Michael Diettrich-Chastain, MA, LPC, DCC, Consultant, Coach.  I met him at The Most Awesome Conference.

Displaying Michael Head Shot 4.jpgWhat’s something you learned from Practice of the Practice?

I have learned so much from Practice of the Practice over the last six months! One thing that stands out is using a service called HARO.

What is your therapeutic specialty?

In therapy I specialize in helping people reduce anxiety when faced with conflict, decision making or stress through mindfulness, and action oriented strategy.

What is an action you took to grow your private practice?

I have utilized the service HARO to grow credibility, online presence and SEO.

Complete this sentence: When I first started a private practice, I…

When I first started a private practice I didn’t know where to start, I felt uncertain and with limited perspective.

How have you grown your income and influence?

The most effective strategy for me thus far in growing income and influence has been collaboration. Through networking, promotion and attending different community events I have been able to connect with other practitioners in different fields that are interested in a collaborative relationship and mutual referrals.

This next month I’ll be co-hosting two different workshops (one I’m getting paid for) where we will talk about our collaborative effort and get major community exposure, being a featured expert.

What’s next for you?

My practice is not where I want it to be yet. But with the resources and tools I’ve gained from Practice of the Practice, in addition to my own hustle, I know that I’m planting seeds for lots of success.

Within the year, my plan is to be at a full capacity (four days per week, four clients per day) and be spending one day working on workshops and trainings for the consulting part of my business.
From there I’ll look at bringing on other consultants and therapists.

What is one specific podcast or article that helped you grow quickly?

Engaging at the Most Awesome Conference speed networking event!

Podcast 76 – Get a six figure income now!

I actually just listened to this again recently because I have been going around to different spas ( and soon to be golf courses to talk about becoming a referral partner). I love the idea of getting in front of the right audience and this podcast gave some helpful pointers.
So far I have had some positive feedback from a couple of the spas I’ve approached, but I have lots more to explore!

If every counselor in the world was reading this, what would you want them to know?

Change your mindset and surround yourself with like mindedness.

michael welcome

Michael’s arrival at The Most Awesome Conference! Working the red carpet.

The mindset shift of truly believing that:

  • There is an abundance of resources, clients and opportunity has been very helpful.
  • I see this as a crucial step to success. The more I surround myself with those that are encouraging and supportive about success and share the vision of abundance, the more opportunity seems to develop.
  • Regardless of the perceived competition in an area, there is always opportunity. Practice of the Practice is a great example of this.

What are 2-3 resources you love? How do you use them to grow your practice?

  1. HARO: To build online presence, SEO and credibility. Over the last few months I have pitched probably 20 times and have been featured in 4 major online sources (Monster, Comidor, Livestrong and Washington Post)
  2. Grasshopper: I have a professional voicemail service that can direct to anyone else in the country I may be working with and it is so cheap!
  3. Other podcasts!: Through following The Practice of the Practice Podcast I have been introduced to so many other great consultants and business experts, like Pat Flynn and Chris Ducker for example. Joe is constantly offering his own expertise but also bringing in others we can learn from, I love this balance. (Note from Joe: I was featured on the New Business Podcast with Chris Ducker, here’s the link.)
